BBC National Orchestra of Wales

Young musicians across Anglesey and Gwynedd are to have the opportunity to perform alongside the prestigious BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBC NOW) later this month. As part of BBC’s ‘Ten Pieces’ project, local youngsters have been invited to rehearse and perform alongside the professional musicians of BBC NOW at a special workshop. The event which will take place at Bangor University’s Pritchard Jones Hall on 18th March will see more than 30 pupils of the William Mathias Schools Music Service take part. This is the third time that BBC Now has held a similar workshop, and this year’s event comes on the back of successful projects in 2014 and 2016.

At the end of the session friends and family are being invited to watch the young musicians perform alongside the professionals of BBC NOW.

Ann P Jones, Manager of the Gwynedd and Mon Schools Music Service said: “This is such a fantastic opportunity for the pupils of the Schools Music Service – to learn from and perform alongside the best in the country. It will be a great experience for them, and the response we’ve had from our youngsters who want to take part has been wonderful.”

Director of BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Michael Garvey said “We’re thrilled to be back in Bangor this week, providing this exciting opportunity to a group of young promising musicians. We hope that by working with the professional players from the national orchestra of Wales that these young players will hone their skills and techniques, and inspire them to explore the wealth of classical music that is at their fingertips.”

As part of the project, parents and young musicians who attend the workshop on the 18th of March are being invited to attend BBC NOW’s concert at Venue Cymru on the following day.
