Musical treat for Cabinet Secretary at school opening

Two months after Ysgol Rhyd y Llan opened its door to pupils for the first time, Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Education will officially open the new school.

In a special visit Kirsty Williams AM will meet pupils and staff, see first-hand the school’s state of the art facilities, and get to experience the pupils’ musical talents.

During the event youngsters will give a special performance as part of Undod, a project led by Gwasanaeth Cerdd Ysgolion (Gwynedd and Anglesey schools music service), and funded by the Arts Council for Wales. The aim of the project was to give pupils the opportunity to get to know each other outside the class room in their new school.

The children have been practicing and taking part in singing and music workshops over recent months under the guidance of Gwyn Evans, Bethan Evans and Kate Gwilliam, all tutors with the music service. Pupils will perform during the official opening, giving the Cabinet Secretary and other guests an opportunity to appreciate the fruits of their hard work and musical talents.

Nia Thomas is Head Teacher at Ysgol Rhyd y Llan, she said: “The children are really looking forward to officially opening their new school and to show off this fantastic site to the Cabinet Secretary. The musical performance will be one of the highlights of the day – the pupils have worked hard and have enjoyed this project with Gwyn and the team. I’m grateful to Gwasanaeth Cerdd Ysgolion for their part in the project, it has been a valuable experience and allowed the children to get to know each other at the beginning of the school year.”

Gwyn Evans said: “I have really enjoyed working with the pupils of Rhyd y Llan on the Undod project, and seeing their musical skills develop. It has been great way for these pupils to get to know each other and work as a team in their brand-new school.”

Ann Jones, manager at Gwasanaeth Cerdd Ysgolion said: “This is the second Undod project that we have worked on. The first was at Ysgol Cybi. Again, we were delighted of the opportunity to work with the new school and to give the children a chance to experiment and develop their skills. Many of the youngsters have been pupils of the music service for years – so it’s been great to see them all get together in their new school.”
