About Us

The main objectives of Gwasanaeth Cerdd Ysgolion (schools music service) is to promote and encourage musical activity among the children and young people of Gwynedd and Anglesey.

We do this by…

  • providing instrumental and vocal music lessons at school to over 3,000 pupils
  • our musical instruments lending scheme
  • regional and county ensembles.

We are funded by Gwynedd Council as well as income from the provision of lessons and occasional grant funding.

The company is managed by a Board of Trustees, with two members of staff responsible for the day to day running of the Service.

The Service was established in 1996, inspired by the well-known Welsh musician and composer, William Mathis. He was Professor and Head of Department at the School of Music at Bangor University from 1970 until 1988, and had significant influence on music education across the region. We are very proud of our connections with William Mathias. Click here to read more about him.
