About Us

The main objective of Gwasanaeth Cerdd Ysgolion (schools music service) is to promote and encourage musical activity among the children and young people of Gwynedd and Môn.

We do this by…

  • Providing weekly instrumental and vocal lessons at school to approx 3,000 pupils
  • Our musical instruments lending scheme
  • Regional and county ensembles
  • Musical Theatre Company
  • Arranging a variety of musical workshops and events

We are funded by Gwynedd Council as well as income from the provision of lessons and occasional grant funding.

The company is managed by a Board of Trustees, with two members of staff responsible for the day to day running of the Service.

The Service was established in 1996, inspired by the well-known Welsh musician and composer, William Mathis. He was Professor and Head of Department at the School of Music at Bangor University from 1970 until 1988, and had significant influence on music education across the region. We are very proud of our close working relationship with the William Mathias Music Centre, as well as with other partners both nationally and locally.
